Imphal, July 31 2016: A mass rally under the theme 'Elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030' organized by the Shija Hospitals and Research Insti tute marked the observation of World Hepatitis Day today.

The rally was flagged off by Health Minister D Korungthang from Kangla western gate and culminated at THAU ground, Thang meiband and took part by over 300 individuals from different fields and professions.

The awareness rally on hepatitis was endorsed by Apunba Fitness Centre, Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association, Manipur Tourism Forum, Manipur State Shumang Leela Council, NCC Girls, Film Forum Manipur, THAU and Blue Leaf Features.

Addressing at the event, Korungthang said, "Every citizen should spread awareness about hepatitis.

We all should work together to make Manipur a hepatitis free State" .

He further said that he would apprise the Chief Minister and other authorities concerned to frame plans and policies to curb the menace of hepatitis in the State.

Dr Kh Palin, Chairman and Managing Director of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute said that awareness is the key to prevention of viral hepatitis.

The whole purpose of organizing the rally is to spread awareness among the common masses on what causes hepatitis and how they are spread.

He said, "What we know about hepatitis today are only the tip of the iceberg.

Unlike HIV/AIDS, people are not aware of the threats and social implications hepatitis poses.

Change in lifestyle and vaccination are needed to tackle hepatitis," Dr Palin added.

As part of the rally, a free screening of hepatitis B and C was also conducted at THAU Ground, Thang meiband.
