Singjamei market complex yet to see light

Three years on and the construction of new market complex at Singjamei is yet to be completed.
The half finished space have been turned into a warehouse for contractors.
The proposal for construction of the new market complex was approved by the State Government and local MLAs, Singjamei Nupi Keithel Lup president Asem Memma Devi told The Sangai Express today.
As such the construction of the new and the demolition of the old market complex began successively.
As most of these vendors were not provided alternative plots, women vendors staged protests demonstrations demanding alternative plots till the completion of the new complex.
The protesters also forced stopped demolition of parts the old market complex in continuation of their demands.
The construction of the new three-storey market complex has been ongoing for three complete years.
While most part of the construction is yet to be completed, the contractors show no urgency in completing the complex either.
The finished space in the new complex is being utilized by the contractors concerned as their own warehouse, Memma stated.
The ground floor of the new complex has been planned as a space for vegetable vendors and the first floor for clothes.
Memma, while expressing disappointment with the pace of the construction works, has demanded authorities concerned to complete the new market complex within a three months timeframe.
Singjamei Nupi Keithel Lup would resort to rigorous protests in case the authorities fail to address their grievances, the lup's secretary stated.
Singjamei market has about 2000 women vendors.
Most of these vendors have been forced to run their business at roadside as no alternative space has been provided after the demolition of the old market complex.
