Ukhrul, January 31 2017: Sihai Khullen village, well known in the district for crafting skill especially vareity of bamboo baskets.

Sihai Khullen village, as a part of promoting their village craftsmen and to preserve the talents of the villagers, bamboo basket making competition was among the main highlights of Luita Phanit (seed sowing festival) competitions, reports Mungchan Zimik.

According to the village headman HAS Leingam, Sihai Khullen is a bamboo rich village.

He said bamboo basket product is the major source of their livelihood.

Sihai Khullen is a small village with just around 150 households.

Nevertheless, the village produces maximum number of bamboo products in the district.

With the wide availability of plastic products at the cheaper rate, demand for Sihai Khullen's bamboo products has declined.

According to craftsman Ringkahao, bamboo basket products were marketed widely but now the demand is for specific purpose.

Tansop used during marriage by the bride is the most expensive bamboo product made by the craftmen of Sihai Khullen.

NYK, Ukhrul coordinator Pauline Monsang was amazed to see the skills of the village craftsmen.

She later assured to organise training programmes and extend all possible help to preserve and promote the skills.

Altogether 15 craftsmen participated in the competition.
