Suspended Constable dies in police custody

A suspended Manipur police Constable who was posted in Reserved Line, died in police custody during interrogation in connection with the escape of Th Nando from JNIMS hospital, at the Joint Interrogation Cell today evening.
On the other hand, family members of the deceased have cried foul and demanded immediate suspension of the police personnel involved in the custodial death.
According to a reliable source, the deceased identified as Md Manjur Ahamad (34) s/o (L) Bashir of Yairipok Ningthourel (presently staying at Hatta) was suspended on March 12 for carrying out prejudicial activities with Th Nando, leader of KCP Nando Faction.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at JNIMS morgue for post mortem and heavy security has been deployed in and around JNIMS hospital area to prevent any kind of unwanted incident.
Speaking to media persons, Anwar Hussain, elder brother of the deceased, said that his brother is a police personnel and had been deployed in JNIMS hospital to look after Nando during his treatment.
He alleged that while his deceased brother was talking with Nando while on duty, some individuals captured his photo and sent it to the SP after which his brother was suspended.
He further claimed that while his brother was under suspension and staying at home, Th Nando escaped from JNIMS Hospital on March 26 and on the next day, March 27, his brother was arrested on the charge he was close to Nando as he had some conversation with Nando while on duty.
Md Manjur Ahamad was remanded to police custody till April 1 and the interrogation was conducted at JIC and due to excessive torture by the police in their custody, Md Manjur Ahamad died inside the JIC during interrogation at around 5.30 pm, he said.
The elder brother alleged that they highly suspected that Manjur Ahamad might have died soon after he was taken for interrogation today, at around noon.
Strongly condemning the death of Md Manjur Ahamad inside police custody without any trial, he demanded befitting punishment to all the police personnel involved in the interrogation.
On the other hand, according to other sources, Md Manjur Ahamad was suspended from his duty for having a conversation with Th Nando and exchanging their phone numbers as well as providing the cell phone number of Nando to his (Nando) family members and relatives.
During the course of his suspension, Nando escaped from JNIMS hospital on March 26, after which Md Manjur Ahamad was summoned and examined and taken into the police custody till April 1 after he was produced before the Court by the IO of the case.
According to the report submitted by the IO of the case before the Court, it is mentioned that the deceased had admitted that he had assisted Th Subol (father of Th Nando) who has been in judicial custody remand from March 14, in keeping the demand letter of the outfit at Noor Jewellery, Hatta.
