Imphal, August 27 2013:
Koirengei Awang Chaokhat Thourang Committee has drawn the attention of State Government towards development of a two-kilometre-long canal from Awang Sekmai to Nilakuthi for irrigating more than 800 hectares of paddy field.
Addressing media persons today, Secretary of Koirengei Awang Chaokhat Thourang Committee Premkumar Chingsubam said that quarrying of sand and stone from Sekmai River has deepened the river bed and so the paddy fields could not be irrigated properly from water sources lying nearby the river.
The villagers of Leikinthabi, Shantikumar, Awang Wabagai, Awang Potsangbam Khullen, Keikol, Nilakuthi, Mongjam and Maiba Khul have developed a temporary canal but it could not serve the purpose.
The authorities concerned should look into the problems of the farmers and develop the canal properly within a short period of time, he urged.
