Imphal, May 26 2020:
No drug rehabilitation centres affiliated to Apunba Drug Rehabilitation Centre Forum (ADRF) will admit new clients, said the forum today.
The decision was taken during an emergency meeting which discussed requests from many parents and guardians who wished to admit their wards who have returned from other States recently, said a statement issued by Sagolshem Herojit Singh, convenor ADRF.
Stating that admitting new clients would be risky at the height of the coronavirus outbreak, the forum pointed out that the State should set up a separate quarantine centre for the returnees who are dependent on drugs and alcohol.
It is quite unfortunate that the State Government has not considered the appeal of the drug users community and its organisations for setting up separate quarantine centres for the drug users at the initial stage of the COVID-19 outbreak.
It is time for the Govt to arrange a separate quarantine centre for the drug users, it said.
The forum also appealed all the rehabilitation centres in the State (sponsored and non sponsored) to abstain from admitting new clients considering the safety of the old inmates and added that it is always ready to extend all efforts if the Govt provides a space in fighting the pandemic.
