Awareness program held on Plant protection/management practices

The people of the State have been consuming vegetables which contain poisonous chemicals since 1960s, said Assistant Professor of Central Agriculture University, Dr Kh Ibohal Singh.
He was speaking at a farmers' training programme, jointly organised by Association of Women Farmers, Oinam and Bishnupur district Officer of Horticulture and Soil Conservation at Oinam Public Hall today.
As a resource person of the training programme, the Assistant Professor spoke on the topic, 'Plant protection/management practices on winter vegetable crops' .
He said that vegetables and food items imported from other States also contain poisonous substances which are highly harmful to human health.
Fruits coming from other States, like grapes and apples are sprinkled with chemical preservatives to make it fresh longer and free from insects, Dr Kh Ibohal Singh said.
These chemicals are consumed by the people of the State while having it, he added.
On the otherhand, various types of chemical fertilizers and insecticides are applied on the vagetables by the farmers of the State, the Assistant Professor said.
Saying that these chemicals affect worst to pregnant women and their foetuses Dr Kh Ibohal informed the gathering that regular consumption of these chemicals also lead to memory loss.
The Assistant Professor also urged the farmers not to use chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides while farming.
CAU Assistant Professor Dr M Dinachandra also spoke on the topic, 'Cultivation practice for winter vegetable crops' in the programme.
Winter seeds like cabbage, cauliflower, peanuts and onion were also distributed to the farmers during the camp.
The programme was organised under the aegis of Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States.
