Imphal, October 20 2016:
Taking serious note of the impasse at Manipur University over the question of reservation quota for admission to various courses inthe varsity, the Joint Students' Co-ordination Committee (AMSU, MSF, KSA, SUK) today said that taking recourse to democratic means to settle the row would be in the best interest of everyone.
However there are some elements who resort to economic blockades and bandhs if their demands are not met, said the JSCC in a statement and added that the National Highways are meant to transport goods and people and should not be used as a tool to pursue one's demand.
Sticking to one reservations norms cannot be the answer to the present imbroglio, said the joint student bodies.
Claiming that the UGC team which recently visited the State was here to study the situation and take stock of the prevailing atmosphere, JSCC said it was not their duty to decide which reservation norms MU should follow.
However in violation of the task with which they were assigned, the UGC team met some select reporters of some media houses while on their way back and planted some stories of their own choice, said the statement.
They were here to study the situation and not stipulate which reservation norms should be followed, added the statement.
Such an act is an insult to the Academic Council of MU, added the statement.
On the other hand the act of the UGC team has only bolstered the demand that Central norms should be applied in MU since it is now a Central varsity.
After MU became a Central university in October 2005, the reservation norms of 31 pc for ST, 2 pc for SC and the rest unreserved was followed.
However in 2007, the Government of India issued a gazette notification that stipulated that Central universities and institutions should follow the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in admission) Act, 2006 .
However unfortunately the then VC and Registrar did not take up any meaningful steps to implement the same, added JSCC.
