DGP opens Manipur police dog squad

DGP of Manipur Police, LM Khaute has strongly condemned the incident at Khudengthabi check post in which a lady IPS officer and her escort party were harassed and assaulted by a Rifleman belonging to 12th Assam Rifles, D-Company of Khudengthabi post yesterday evening.
Replying to queries by media persons following the inauguration of Manipur police dog squad at Lamphel, opposite Officer's mess, 86th Battalion CRPF, today afternoon, DGP LM Khaute assured that the State police is in touch with the Assam Rifles authority.
As the lady officer has also lodged a complaint at Tengoupal PS in this regard, police are looking to follow necessary legal procedures.
On the other hand, during the inauguration of the police dog squad, the DGP said that at present, the squad consists of 4 Belgian Malinois out of which 2 will be used for detecting explosives while the other 2 will be used for detecting drugs and narcotic substances.
Besides, there are 2 trained Labradors with Manipur police dog squad that have been providing valuable K-9 services, he said, explaining that police will now be in a better position to combat drug menace as well as handle internal security challenges.
He said that Manipur police dog squad is being inaugurated after a gap of many years and this has been done in view of the visits of VIPs and WIPs to the State as well as to detect drugs/narcotics and explosive materials.
Earlier Manipur police used dog from other agencies.
From the past 5 years, Manipur police have been building up its K 9 services by procuring some dogs considering the drugs and security scenario in the State and considering the importance of having properly trained dogs in the force, he added.
The DGP continued that after taking proper approval from the Government, the 4 Belgian Malinois were procured from Punjab Police Dog Training Centre.
Dog trainers from the State police were also sent to get proper training at centres in Bengaluru, which are run by Punjab Police Dog Training Centre, for handling and training of the dogs in Manipur police dogs squad, the DGP explained.
