Importance of safeguarding water bodies highlighted to shelter migratory birds

A one day motivation camp on Loktak Lake Water Birds Census-2022 was held at Loktak Inland Water Transport complex, Phubala today.
The camp was jointly organised by Indian Birds Conservation Network, Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum.
Today's programme was graced by Dr T Brajakumar, Deputy Director, Environment & Climate Change, Pheiroijam Nando Luwang, president AMUCO, T Budhi, president, Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, K Jugeshwor, principal, Kumbi College, RK Birjit, principal, Mangolnganbi College, Ningthoukhong, N Sony, Assistant Professor, Moirang College and M Shimadhon, executive engineer, LDA as the presidium members, said a press release by Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum.
The camp was held with an aim to identify the migratory birds at Loktak and other lakes of the State and to maintain a record by conducting a census and also to discuss the deteriorating conditions of the lakes and other water bodies in the State.

The resource persons also stressed on the importance of safeguarding the flora and fauna of the State and called for concerted efforts to maintain the water bodies and hills in a proper manner to ensure that the migratory birds visit the State.
Expressing concern over the deteriorating conditions of Loktak and other major bodies of the State, the resource persons maintained that if such conditions are not checked and immediate measures have not been taken up, then the migratory birds which are considered as natural indicators for climate change may not migrate to the State anymore.
Speaking as the chief guest, Dr T Brajakumar assured to provide best possible help to bird lovers and enthusiasts in the State towards their efforts in protecting the birds from the department's side.
Addressing the gathering, Pheiroijam Nando Luwang emphasized on the importance of safeguarding nature and said that those who do not love nature will never be able to progress in life.
He also mentioned the Great Chinese Famine led by the shallow policies of those in power which disrupted the ecosystem and caused the famine affecting the lives of many.
He further assured that AMUCO will extend full support to the initiatives taken for safeguarding the birds and ecosystem.
Speaking on the importance of preserving the Loktak lake which is the most famous tourist place in the State, he appealed to all to take up all possible measures and dedicated efforts to ensure that the lake retains its uniqueness and beauty to attract more tourists, added the statement.
