Imphal, November 18 2020:
Amid the public demand to clean Imphal city of the garbage piled up at many places, staff of Imphal Municipal Corporation have started a cease work strike citing no pay.
The cease-work strike is being launched by the regular, muster roll and contract staff of the Corporation protesting that they have not been paid for months.
Imphal Municipal Employees' Union president K Bijoy said the regular staff have not been paid for 8 months while muster roll and contract staff are without pay for three months.
The employees had earlier appealed the IMC authority to pay their salaries before the Ningol Chakkouba festival.
They had also written an application to the IMC Mayor to pay at least one two months salary before November 10.However, there was no response from the Mayor and the Government, he said.
He claimed that on November 11, the Mayor allegedly informed them that there is no money to pay the employees their salaries.
Following this on November 16, the union then approached the Commissioner informing that the employees were launching agitation denouncing non payment of their salaries, Bijoy added.
Meanwhile, with the staff on strike, many places including BT Road and Hao Keithel under the jurisdiction of Imphal Municipal Corporation have garbage piled up putting the health of commuters and locals at risk.
On the other hand, the Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India (CPI) appealed to the Imphal Municipal Council and to the authorities concerned to clean the piled-up waste materials near Irabot Bhawan and Roop Mahal Tank and other areas of Imphal City.
The waste materials are causing havoc to the passers by and pose great threat to the public as such places will become the breeding ground for many diseases, Stating that the waste materials are polluting the environment and is a major concern due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which may fuel the spread of virus.
It further lamented that the Government is investing huge amount of money in painting the three Ema Keithels and in cleaning Thangal Road but ignoring the piled-up waste in many places of Imphal City which may deter the aim of making the city a smart one.
They also urged the Ministers to visit these places to check the ground reality.
