Imphal, November 18 2015:
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi drew sharp criticism from the BJP for inaugurating newly constructed Sanjenthong ahead of the upcoming by-election for Thongju and Thangmeiband Assembly Constituencies.
Ibobi today inaugurated the four-lane bridge, three days ahead of the by-election for Thangmeiband and Thongju, which will go to the polls on Saturday.
The State Government secured permission from the Election Commission of India for inaugurating the bridge as the election model code of conduct prevents the Government from launching development projects.
"The State Government is technically right as it has got the permission from the Election Commission.
But the Government is morally wrong in opening the bridge as a by-election is coming up," BJP National general secretary in-charge of North East Ram Madhav told a press conference held at BJP head office here today.
Madhav arrived here today on a day long visit to oversee the last minute preparations of BJP Manipur Pradesh for the by-election.
Madhav further charged that the inauguration of the bridge was a clear sign that the Congress government was in desperation to show its achievements ahead of the by-election and also its fear of biting the dust in both Thongju and Thangmeiband.
"The State Government has nothing much to showcase as its achievements to the people ahead of the by-election.
As the Government is apprehensive of the outcome of the by-election, it desperately needed to inaugurate the bridge.
It is a sign of fear," the BJP leader said.
Stating that the completion of the bridge was delayed for several months, Madhav asked what was the harm in waiting for some more days instead of rushing it.
Madhav went on to slam Ibobi Singh led Congress Government saying that extortion and corruption were rampant.
"There is utter misrule in Manipur for more than one decade.
There is no development and no industry.
The BJP wants to bring good governance and development in Manipur," he said.
Stating that BJP candidates Thongam Bishwajit Singh and Khumukcham Joykishan Singh are strong candidates, the BJP leader expressed confidence of winning both the seats.
He said the BJP was fighting the election on the plank of bringing BJP in power in the State and the party would have resounding victory.
