Imphal, September 13 2019:
A mass rally to put an end to single-use plastics would be held on September 21 around Imphal under the aegis of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).
A decision to this effect was adopted at a meeting held this afternoon with MAHUD Commissioner M Joy in the chair.
The meeting was attended by IMC Corporators, officials, SHGs and NGOs and it was also decided to hold a public meeting at GM Hall after the rally.
IMC would also carry out an awareness campaign from September 21 about the growing need to put an end to using single-use plastics.
The meeting also deliberated to ensure 100 per cent collection of solid wastes generated by each household within its jurisdiction.
It is said that individuals or groups which bring out highest volume of plastic wastes stored in their households would be given incentives after the IMC weighs them.
Sources informed that Dalmiya Cement Group has agreed to take plastic wastes generated in the State.
Similar campaigns against single-use plastics would be undertaken in areas covered by other Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.
Notably, the Government of India has already announced that single-use plastics would be banned throughout the country from October 2 .
