Imphal, June 13 2013:
Vehemently condemning that Government of Manipur for branding evicted Naga River Lane Kabo Leikai residents as fake patta holders, Congress party legislator from Wangkhei assembly constituency Yumkham Erabot today demanded that the Government provide evidence to substantiate its claim.
Speaking to newspersons today at his Khurai Ahongei Leikai residence, where a number of family members recently evicted from Kabo Leikai were found taking shelter, Erabot regretted that the common citizens have been forcibly evicted from their homes for some construction project.
Noting that the eviction drive was carried out despite injunction orders of a lower court as well as the high court, he opined that the Government action testify lack of compassion for the ordinary citizens who had earned their rights to settle there.
Informing that over 12 communities have been affected due to the eviction drive, Erabot challenged the Government to provide evidence that the settlers do not possess valid land documents.
The fact that these families have been paying land tax is enough evidence that the Government action is a violation of legal as well as humane principles, he said.
Affirming that he would provide all possible assistance to the affected families, the MLA also called upon the lawyer fraternity to ensure that justice prevails in the case at the earliest.
