Bishnupur, October 12 2023: Around 460 displaced people from Churachandpur who have been rendered homeless during the course of communal violence in the State have been shifted to temporary accommodations constructed at Sericulture Training Institute, Kwakta today.

The displaced people were taking refuge at various shelter camps opened in Moirang AC ever since the outbreak of communal conflict.

Before shifting to temporary accommodations, a simple programme was held at Ibudhou Thangjing Leikol in Moirang where essential household items such as gas sets, utensils etc were distributed to the displaced people.

The programme was graced by Moirang AC MLA Th Shanti; Bishnupur DC, Lourembam Bikram; Bishnupur SP, K Meghachandra; Ibudhou Thangjing Seva Mandal president K.Achouba; former Associate Professor Y Modhu and Thangjing Seva Mandal secretary K Shitaljit as the presidium members.

Speaking at the occasion, Moirang AC MLA said that the step to shift the displaced people to renovated quarters and pre-fabricated houses at Sericulture Training Institute, Kwakta has been taken up for the well being of these displaced people.

The MLA also informed that welfare schemes such as providing loans of Rs 50, 000 under Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), organising skill development programmes, extending required machinery etc are in the pipeline aimed at enhancing the economic status of the displaced people so as to make them self-reliant.

Bishnupur DC, L Bikram informed that 120 pre-fabricated houses have been constructed in the complex and around 196 structures including former staff quarters, boys and girls hostels, training halls etc have been renovated which can accommodate around 720 individuals.

However, for the first phase, 460 individuals have been shifted considering the immense problems faced by the displaced people, he added.

Later, Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam and Moirang AC MLA carried out an inspection visit at the complex at Kwakta.

Speaking on the sidelines, Govindas Konthoujam assured to extend best possible support to the displaced people.

The Minister also gave assurance that the Government has been taking up measures to safeguard the property of the displaced Meiteis.

Govindas further maintained that the Government is focusing to expedite the resettlement measures of the displaced people with adequate security and is striving to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.

It is worth noting that there were divided opinions among the people who have been shifted to temporary accommodations today as some of them lauded the arrangements while some expressed discontentment.

However the common tone which rang through was the desire to resettle at their respective native lands peacefully.
