World Population Day observed in State

Like in other parts of the world, Directorate of Family Welfare Service observed the World Population Day at its office premises today.
Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Family Welfare Director Dr L Surchandra and State Mission Director of State Health Society, Devesh Deval graced the occasion as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Phungzathang Tonsing said the total population of the world has crossed seven billion although the area of the world has not increased.
Saying that the world population was only about 100 crores some 160 years back, the Minister said that the rate in increase of population is alarming.
World Population Day was instituted in 1989 as an outgrowth of the day of five billion, marked on July 11, 1987, he added.
Mentioning that the ever increasing population has exerted pressure on food, health, education and money, Phungzathang Tonsing said that different types of negative impacts are being given to the ecological balance of the Earth.
As a fallout, environmental degradation and climate change are evident and many plant and animal species have had to face extinction, the Minister pointed out.
In order to save the world from the population explosion everybody must adopt and promote family planning, added Tonsing.
Family Welfare Director Dr L Surchandra while speaking at the occasion said that India's population has now touched the 1.22 billion mark.
Speaking on the State scenario, Dr Surchandra said that Manipur's population increase is at the rate of 14.9 per thousand per year, while death rate is 4.2 per thousand per year.
