Nupilan anniversary to highlight graft, crime against women

Observance of the historic Nupilan commemorative function this year will be based on the dual issues of corruption and crime against women, declared All Manipur Nupi Marup president S Sorojini.
Speaking to newspersons at Irawat Bhavan here today, Sorojini opined that highlighting rampant corruption and increasing cases of crime against women has become inevitable as these two social malaise need to be tackled in an effective manner with the active participation of all section of the society.
Pointing out that inspite of Government policy for women's empowerment there had been no respite for the women and girl child from the onslaught of anti-social elements children, she announced that apart from observance of the forthcoming Nupilan anniversary to condemn atrocities committed against women, Nupi Marup will organise rallies and public meetings to highlight their plight.
Reiterating that theme of this year's observance would be on crime against women and corruption, Marup secretary Ksh Tama Devi opined that both the issues need to be effectively tackled to ensure security of future Manipuri society.
Citing denial of prescribed assistance to expectant mothers and other health care benefits as instances of corruption eroding the Manipuri society, Tama Devi also decried alleged indifferent attitude of the State Government to implement a Supreme Court decree (April 19, 2009) for rehabilitation schemes for sex workers and victims of human trafficking.
Suggesting that Government empower State women Commission to enable the panel function more effectively, she also opined that collaboration between the Commission and women organisations would be helpful in tackling crime against women.
Tama Devi also lamented that inspite of presence of women organisations and vigilant groups in almost every localities anti-social elements continue to fulfil their animalistic intentions.
According to the Marup's vice president Shakhi the women's organisation since its inception in January 1940 had been taking active role in various issues including anti-AFSPA campaigns and movements against crime against women.
She also expressed hope the upcoming Ningol Chakkouba festival will herald a new era wherein Manipuri women would be emancipated from various forms of atrocities.
