Imphal, November 10 2011:
Taking serious note of the claim issued by the DGP of Manipur police in connection with the incident at Noney on November 4, the United Naga Council has dubbed the claim as false and fabricated.
Refuting the version of the DG, the UNC in a statement today asserted that the IRB and police commandos came to Noney and started indiscriminate firing fully knowing that the 72 hours bandh called by the UNC was on.
Contrary to the claim of the DGP, no explanation was given that the IRB and police commandos were on duty to escort the personnel who were deployed for duty during the Union Home Minister's visit to Tousem.
Are the Naga public sub-human beings or can they be shot or killed by the police commandos at will, questioned the UNC.
Accusing the State police of being communal, UNC said that it was this mindset that led to the firing at Mao on May 6 last year in which two students were killed while hundreds of women and youths were injured.
A number of women from Ukhrul, Chandel, Senapati and Tamenglong have been at the receiving end of the communal police force, it charged.
Since the Nagas cannot live peacefully in Manipur, the demand for an Alternative Arrangement was raised, alleged UNC and added that valley based civil society organisations had added fuel to the fire.
Seeking the immediate attention of the Centre, the UNC urged the Naga people to stay united and firm at this critical juncture.
