Free animal health campaign commences

A free Animal health campaign organised by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandary, Government of Manipur was commenced today at Synod Hall, Churachandpur by the Health and family welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsin.
Minister Phungzathang Tonsin congratulating the deparment for organising the first ever Health campaign in the State, said that Churachanpur district homes a large number of meat consuming families therefore, the Government sould focus on improving the animal farms of the area.
Speaking on the event, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Minister Govindas Konthoujam said that the campaign will strech to a period of one year.
The campaign, starting off from CCpur, will cover the entire state, Govindas added.
He further informed that the State has also pledged a demand to the Indian Government for the establishment of quarantine stations in the State inorder to check the importation of unhealthy animals and birds in the border areas.
Also, Govindas added, the deparment has submitted a project report to the Indian Govt regarding the improvement and hybridisation of Tuibong poultry, CCpur.
He further assured that the unfinished veterinary dispensary and hospital buildings of the district will soon be completed before the year ends.
In continuation of his speech, Govindas appealed the farmers to remain updated about the latest schemes taken up by the department as they are, he assured, fully based on providing employment opportunities to the people.
Speaking on the improvement of animal farms, Govindas added that a new variety of rabbit known as Angora rabbit will be introduced shortly in the State.
The National wood board have also signalled the rearing of this animal in the State.
Angora Rabbit is reared both ways for meat and for skin.
The market value of its skin is worth Rs 1500 per kg and its meat cost more than any other animals meats available in the State.
Angora rabbit can reproduce at the rate of 5 kits five to six times per year.
The National wood board, will therefore take charge of introducing the animal to the State.
Govindas said that the board will provide the necessary amount for rearing the rabbit to a selected team of six benificiaries per district.
The event was also attended by veterinary commissioner L Lakher and ADC chairman L Guite.
