Rape accused convicted

Imphal, August 08 2024:
N Keertichand Singh, Session Judge of Bishnupur convicted a 40 year old man in a rape and cheating case, today.
The case was on against convict Suranjoy, s/o (L) Kwaklei of Charangpat Mamang Leikai after the mother of the victim lodged a complaint with Bishnupur women police station in May 2020 .
The complainant stated that her daughter was kidnapped by the convict on May 4, 2020 and proceeded towards Hiyanglam to spend the night there on the pretext of eloping.
She continued that the convict, however, abandoned her daughter the next day and the victim was rescued from Hiyanglam.
The sentence hearing will be announced tomorrow.
After the completion of the investigation, charges were framed against the convict on July 27, 2022 to which the convict pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution in order to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt produced seven prosecution witnesses and other related materials and documents before the Court.
No witness was produced before the Court from the side of the convict.
During the trial of the case, the Court heard the submission of Public Prosecutor L Danny Meitei and defence counsel at length.
The Court after hearing PP, defence counsel and on perusal of material on record observed that there is sufficient evidence to hold the accused guilty of offences charged under Section 376/417 of Indian Penal Code, 1896 .
Accordingly, the Court convicted Sairem Suranjoy Singh under Section 376 (1) and 417 of Indian Penal Code, 1896 .
