Tarao Tribe Union conference underway

The 18th General Conference of Tarao Tribe Union (TTU) has started since January 7 at Bukthrol Village, Chandel District under the theme, "Unity and Responsibility" .
On the second day of the conference, the commemoration and Tarao Tribe Recognition function was attended by Dr Keisam Sobita Devi, Director, Art and Culture, Government of Manipur as the chief guest, Shantibala Devi, Museum keeper of State Museum as the functional president, Dr K Sushila, Deputy Director, Manipur State Archive as the guest of honour and Ws Kanral, Social worker as a Special invitee.
Tarao tribe is one of the smallest tribes in the world and was accorded recognition in 2003.In that context, M Rumshe and K Mela, former and incumbent Presidents of TTU compared the population of Tarao tribe to that of the endangered Sangai in Keibul Lamjao, stating that the endangered species would outnumber the total population of Tarao tribe.
Dr Sushila spoke about various schemes and funds which will be granted to the villagers for developmenmt purposes.
Dr Keisham Devi also spoke about the need to conserve the indigenous ornaments and other unique identities of the tribe.
