Imphal, August 06 2019: Expressing grave concern that Article 371 of the Indian Constitution may be scrapped from the States of North East region following the abolition of Articles 370 and 35A which gave special status to Jammu & Kashmir, AMUCO president Ph Deban Sharma has called for synchronization of the intellectuals, legal experts and CSOs to defend North East in case the question of scrapping Article 371 from the said region emerges.

He was speaking as a presidium member in a thanks giving ceremony cum distribution of donors' card and certificates of appreciation to blood donors and medical professionals who helped in conducting blood donation camp on June 18 this year which was organized by the Organizing Committee of the Great June Uprising, Unity Day at Lamyanba Shanglen today.

Notably, most States in the North East region are accorded special provisions under Article 371 of the Indian Constitution wherein Article 371(A), 371(B), 371(C), 371 (F), 371(G), 371(H) have been applied to Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh respectively.

Reminding that Article 370 has been abolished from the Indian Constitution, the AMUCO president cautioned that the next phase of scrapping special provisions provided under certain Articles of the Indian Constitution may follow suit soon.

He further opined that it is right time for all the CSOs, legal experts and intellectuals to join heads and work out strategies to defend the North East region in case the Central Government attempts to abolish the special provisions given in the Indian Constitution with respect to the region.

Lauding the role taken by medical professionals in the society as well as in conducting free medical camp and blood donation camp on the day of June Uprising Day, Unity Day which was held at Kekrupat, Deban urged all to respect and understand medical profession as well as to exempt medical professionals whenever there are bandhs and other forms of agitation.

UCM president Sunil Karam remarked that donating blood on June 18 has special significance and added that donating blood on the day shows the spirit of one's love for motherland.

The function was also attended by RIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Ch Arunkumar and JNIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Nongombam Jitendra among others as the presidium members.
