Imphal, February 05 2025:
Even as Congress is apparently preparing to move a No Confidence Motion in the State Assembly scheduled to begin from February 10, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has rushed to Delhi for a possible meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Chief Minister left Imphal today from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.
Reportedly summoned by the Union Home Minister, as per sources, his visit to Delhi came amid a widening crack within his Government and a major threat in the form of a No Confidence Motion.
Earlier, the Union Minister had reportedly summoned Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Yumnam Khemchand, who arrived Delhi on February 4, and met Central BJP leaders.
The Rural Development Minister is still in Delhi.
On December 9, 2024, Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
While the agenda of the meetings have not been made public, the "slew of summons" strongly points to a rising discord within the State BJP Ministers and MLAs, said highly placed sources in the Government.
Several MLAs and even some Ministers in the Cabinet are "revolting" and they have expressed dissent against the Chief Minister, said the sources.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh's leadership and his handling of the Manipur crisis have often come under fire from Opposition Congress and some ruling Ministers and MLAs.
Significantly, N Biren's grip on the Chief Minister's chair has been threatened and apparently "weakened" in the recent days by the internal discord and NPP MLAs' withdrawal of support to the NDA in the face of a possible "No Confidence Motion" from the Congress in the Assembly, scheduled to begin
from February 10 .
Five NPP MLAs, Kh Loken (Wangoi AC), Thongam Shanti (Moirang AC), I Nalini (Oinam AC), Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong AC) and Mayanglambam Rameshwar (Kakching AC) may sit on the Opposition bench in the Assembly starting February 10 .
While there has been a rising speculation about a possible change in the Government led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the Union Minister is trying to convince and calm the revolting MLAs and Ministers so that the Government can survive a No Confidence Motion, if it is moved, said the sources.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has already reached Delhi for a possible meeting with Amit Shah, and several other Ministers and MLAs of the party may follow him, added the sources.
Whether the Ministers and MLAs have been summoned by the Union Home Minister or not couldn't be ascertained.
Several of the State's Ministers and MLAs are already in Delhi.
