NIA Court nods to further detention of Lunminsei

The Court of Special Judge, NIA Manipur today accepted an application filed by NIA for extension of Lunminsei Kipgen's detention period from 90 days to 180 days.
Lunminsei Kipgen is the prime accused in the brutal killing of four innocent persons near a water treatment plant at Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou on January 18, 2024 at around 3.50 pm.
The application was filed by the Chief Investigating Officer of NIA Imphal Branch before the Court on August 27 against prime accused Lunminsei Kipgen alias Langinmang alias Mang alias Levis (35) s/o Songin of Mamong Village, Henglep Block, Churachandpur.
The Court heard the application and reserved its judgement till today.
During the hearing yesterday, prime accused Lunminsei Kipgen was produced before the Court via video conferencing from Lokhra Jail, Guwahati.
He was arrested by Assam police and lodged in Lokhra Jail, Guwahati.
The accused was formally arrested in connection with the present case of killing four innocent civilians at Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou and remanded to police custody and then to judicial custody.
During the hearing, the special PP NIA stated that the judicial custody period of 90 days expires on September 4 and further detention of the prime accused is required in order to complete the investigation of the case.
Video clippings of the incident have been recovered and sent for forensic examination but the report is pending, the Special PP said.
After perusal of the materials on record including the investigation reports indicating the progress of investigation, materials against the accused, the reason for non-completion of investigation during the 90 days period and requirement for further detention of the accused, the Court granted leave for extension of Lunminsei Kipgen's detention period from time to time on furnishing sufficient cause up to 180 days in total in accordance with the provisions of the statute.
