Imphal, March 04 2016 :
A large number of womenfolk of Naharup Pangong and surrounding areas today blocked all the roads in the area as well as staged a sit-in-protest demanding arrest of the culprits behind the death of Yumnam (N) Nongmaithem (O) Memicha (45) .
The woman was found dead at a paddy field at Samaram on February 26 .
A protester identified as H Jibanmala said that the Government has not taken up any action although they have submitted a memorandum a week back.
She said that womenfolk from Naharup Pangong to Kongba took part in today's sit-in-protest.
Claiming that Memicha did not commit suicide, Jibanmala alleged that the woman was murdered by the family members of her husband Shyam.
Although, Shyam is from Samaram, Memicha had been staying at her maternal house with her husband and children at Naharup Pangong since the past two years.
Memicha went missing after she went to her husband's house at Samaram Mamang Leikai on February 22.As the woman never returned home, Memicha's daughter went to Samaram in search of her mother.
After she could not find her there, Memicha's family filed a missing complaint at Thoubal police station.
On February 26, Memicha's lifeless body was recovered from a paddy field at Samaram Panthak Loukol.
Jibanmala alleged that after Memicha was murdered at the paddy field, Shyam's family members left a plastic can of insecticide near the body.
Jibanmala said that Shyam received a distress call from Memicha that she was not allowed to move by Shyam's family members and her mobile phone was switched off thereafter on February 22 .
Saying that the incident happened within MLA O Landhoni's Khangabok AC, Jibanmala urged the Government to take the matter seriously and book the culprits at the earliest.
They would intensify the agitation with the help of different CSOs and NGOs if the demand is not fulfilled, she said.
Memicha's daughter Miranda said that she went to Samaram in search of her mother on February 23 .
However, she did not find her there.
Miranda said that when she enquired the whereabouts of her mother, her uncle (Shyam's younger brother) told her that they were also looking for Memicha.
Miranda alleged that her uncle told her that if anything unwanted happened to Memicha, the money which they borrowed from him must be repaid by her father Shyam and his children.
When she asked about filing a missing report at the police station, her uncle asked Miranda not to do so, as they were searching for her mother, she said.
The uncle also promised her to inform them about her mother over the phone.
However, he never made any call, Miranda said.
She urged the authority concerned to book the killers of her mother and give befitting punishment.
It may be mentioned that Memicha's body is still lying at JNIMS morgue after post mortem examination was conducted on February 27 in the presence of a Duty Magistrate with full video coverage.
