Imphal, August 03 2024:
Many organisations have vehemently condemned the brutal crackdown on displaced persons in which several protesters and a reporter sustained grievous injuries.
In a release, the All Manipur Students Guardians' Organisation (AMSGO) strongly condemned the excessive police action and urged the Government to take up befitting action against all the rogue police personnel at the earliest.
The displaced persons who have been enduring all kinds of misery in relief camps for the last 15 months after their houses were burnt down by Kuki militants were taking out a protest rally demanding early resettlement on Thursday.
But Imphal East district police unleashed brute force upon the hapless protesters in the name of preventing the rally.
Apart from firing several rounds of live bullets, tear gas shells, rubber bullets and mock bombs upon the displaced people even before they came out of their Akampat relief camp, the security forces mercilessly assaulted a journalist.
Many young students of nearby S Chaoba Memorial School fainted on hearing the sounds of repeated firing of tear gas shells and five bullets.
The AMSGO also appealed to the Government to make necessary arrangements to resettle the IDPs at their original homes and provide adequate security to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, the Manipur State Council of All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO) convened an emergency meeting at Irawat Bhawan, BT Road, Imphal on August 1 .
The meeting presided by Dr M Nara Singh and G Tomba Sharma strongly condemned the high handed manner in which IDPs were treated by the authorities.
The meeting also denounced the brutal assault of a journalist and the excessive force used by security personnel against the IDPs who were taking out a protest rally demanding resettlement at their original homes.
The meeting resolved that the Government should take up appropriate actions against the erring police personnel and resettlement measures should be initiated without any further.
Furthermore, the meeting decided to raise the issue of ethnic violence in Manipur which has resulted in the death of 226 people and displaced more than 60,000 people in the ensuing National Council Meeting of AIPSO scheduled to be held on August 16-18, 2024 at Delhi.
