Presentation of incentive awards to five staff members for their dedicated service marked the celebration of Keibul Lamjao national park's 37 years in existence.
Even though the National Park status was conferred to Keibul Lamjao on March 28, 1977 after official recognition of the same as a Wild Life Sanctuary granted in 1954 the anniversary celebration was held today due to the Holi (Yaoshang) festival with Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Th Mohendra Pratap and Deputy Conservator of Forests (Park & Sanctuary) L Joykumar gracing the event as the chief guest and functional president respectively.
Environmentalist Dr kh Shamungou and Kumbi College principal K jugeshor also attended the celebration as the guests of honour.
In his brief address to the gathering, Mohendra Pratap acknowledged unstinted support, effort and contribution by the locals in protecting the Park as well as endangered animals.
Inspite of the Park still facing numerous problems overall situation has vastly improved due to vigilant locals and their indomitable spirit in the conservation of endangered species living in the Park, said the Conservator of Forests.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shamungou proposed that future celebrations of the Park's anniversary be held as 'Sangai Day' for renewed focus on conservation of the Park's world famous deer species as well as to promote the culturally-significant but highly endangered animal.
On the otherhand DCF L Joykumar noting contribution of the locals in protecting the Park and its animals declared that meritorious class X and XI students residing in the Park's periphery would be awarded cash prizes.
