Imphal, August 02 2024:
Two Meitei men were rescued by Army personnel after being physically assaulted by Kukis at Leimakhong Bazar under Sekmai Police Station at 2 pm today.
The two have been identified as Konthoujam James (41), s/o K Gouramani of Awang Khunou Sabal Leikai, Imphal West and Laishram Sunder (39), s/o Late L Manglemjao of Khangabok in Thoubal district.
Notably, L Sunder is a VDF personnel.
The two were reportedly hired to work as labourers for Athokpam Raju, a contractor from Kakwa, at Leimakhong Army Camp.
They drove towards Leimakhong Bazar in an Alto Car going beyond the spot where they were supposed to meet the contractor.
At this point, they were stopped and checked by Kukis of the area and upon identifying the two as Meiteis, they started beating up the duo.
Afterwards, they were forcefully put in an auto rickshaw in an attempt to take them to another location.
Fortunately, Army personnel of the 57 Mountain Division Station HQ rushed to their rescue.
As the Army personnel roughed up a few of the Kuki miscreants, Kuki men and women began pelting stones at the Station HQ and caused damage to various properties.
They accused the Army personnel of being biased towards the two men who were Meiteis.
Meanwhile, the Army personnel provided first aid to the two men at their military hospital.
While L Sunder sustained minor injuries, K James was seriously wounded.
A team led by OC, Sekmai Police Station also arrived at Leimakhong Army Camp after receiving information about the incident.
However, they could not return with the two injured men as a mob of Kuki people blocked the road.
Around 7 pm, the two men were successfully moved from the camp with the Army providing the needed security.
