Jeweller arrested by police dies at RIMS

A jeweller who was pulled up by police in their efforts to recover certain amount indebted to him died at RIMS.
The deceased has been identified as one Arambam Nanao (35) s/o late A Dhananjoy of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai.
Speaking to media persons in front of RIMS Casualty Ward today, Nanao's aunt Arambam (O) Lata (54) said they were informed by a local resident through telephone about abduction of Nanao by some unidentified persons from near his house at around 8.30 am today.
At that time, all the family members were totally in the dark regarding who were the abductors and why they abducted Nanao, Lata said.
Only after one Th Jitendra, a Sub-Inspector posted at Imphal police station called Nanao's family through telephone at around 10.30 am to come to the police station, it was realised that Nanao had been arrested by police.
As some family members went to Imphal police station, it became clear that Nanao was arrested for a certain amount he owed.
Even as the family members requested to give just two days' time to pay back the money, SI Jitendra turned down the request and asked the family members to come after three hours, according to Lata.
In the afternoon, a police team led by SI Jitendra brought Nanao to his home searched a jewellery shop opened at his house.
Even as the family members offered to pay Rs two lakh, SI Jitendra turned down the offer as well as Nanao's repeated pleadings, Lata said.
As Nanao collapsed all of a sudden, the police team took him away.
"We followed them and reached RIMS but Nanao failed to respond to any treatment and died in the hospital", Lata said.
Alleging that the death of Nanao was a custodial death, Lata said that many injury marks and bruises were seen on his body.
She said that the police officer and all the personnel responsible for the death of Nanao should be awarded exemplary punishment.
On learning about Nanao's death, his wife Teresa (29) lost consciousness and was rushed to RIMS.
Nanao is survived by his wife and three sons.
The youngest son is just 32 days old.
The body has been deposited at RIMS mortuary.
