Imphal, July 31 2019:
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur State Committee has announced that it will endorse the 14 hour State wide bandh called by the All Manipur Excavator, Local Truck, Tipper Owners and Workers Association (AMELTTOWA) from 4 am to 6 pm tomorrow.
A press release issued by the general secretary of AITUC Manipur mentioned that another association, the Apunba Shinmi Lup Awang Maikei (ASLAM) has already imposed an indefinite bandh along the Imphal-Dimapur road blocking all sand laden vehicles coming from Dimapur side.
Stating that the bandh is reportedly called in response to the apathy of the State Government towards the suffering of the sand miners, labourers and transporters who are now struggling for a means of livelihood, it mentioned that these people are now stranded without any means of income to sustain their livelihood and the education of their children.
It continued that the people of the State are now forced to buy imported sand at exorbitant prices, private or public construction works in the State have virtually stopped and the marginalised poor workers, mostly women, have been rendered jobless and reasoned that it is the need of the hour for the State Government to frame a policy for streamlining mining of sand and quarrying of stones as well as to give license to the local workers in such a way that such activities (mining and quarrying) will not have any adverse impact on the ecological balance, smooth flow of water, river beds etc.
AITUC further extended its full support to the cause of the workers as well as the State wide bandh called tomorrow.
