Training programme on Patchouli

A two-day intensive training programme on usefulness of Patchouli and other medicinal plants began from today at Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel with Commissioner (Horticulture & Soil Conservation) K Moses Chalai gracing the inaugural function as the chief guest.
nedfi R&D Centre Guwahati's Director dr DN Dutta, who attended the occasion as a guest of honour cum resource person said usage and benefit of Patchouli is not limited to human beings alone as its curative property can be applied in animal and livestock.
Stating that inspite of significant increase in the number of people preferring vegetables as the staple food item many are still naive about its medicinal value.
While informing that under NEDFi preservation of 160 varieties of medicinal plants is currently underway, Dr Dutta further conveyed that oil extracts of Patchouli which originated from Indonesia is in high demand by pharmaceutical companies and perfume makers.
In his address, Moses Chalai called upon the State farmers to consult subject experts in order to reap benefit from Patchouli cultivation.
As functional president of the training programme Director (health Services) S Ibomcha singh briefed the gathering on methods of planting and advantage of medicinal plants.
About 30 trainees from different parts of the State are taking part in the training programme organised by Manipur State Medicinal Plants Board.
