Rapist sentenced to 7 yrs in jail

Imphal, December 31 2019: Heikham Herojit (30) s/o Nongthon of Yairipok Top, was sentenced to 7 years in jail and a fine of Rs 10,000, by Imphal West Session Judge RK Memcha today, in connection with the kidnapping and rape of a minor.

He had been convicted by the same Court yesterday for the incident which occurred on August 6, 2011.During the sentence hearing today, the APP of the State submitted that Hei-kham Herojit was convicted under section 366 and 376 of the IPC and as his crime is serious, he needs to be given the maximum sentence or life imprisonment along with fine.

On the other hand, during the proceeding, Herojit's defense counsel contended that he was engaged as ma-son and worked hard to meet the needs of his family with his meagre income.

The counsel further reasoned that if he is properly guided, Herojit will become a responsible person in the society.

After going through the submissions of both parties and the case records as well, the Court sentenced Herojit to 7 years in jail.

It further ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 as well.
