Imphal, December 31 2014 :
Annoyed by the failure of the authority concerned to make the street lamps erected along the flyover functional, Development Committee, Uripok has warned of launching an indefinite blockade of Uripok flyover from Jan 10 until proper lighting system is installed on the bridge.
Addressing a press meet held at Uripok Tourangbam Leikai today, convener of the Committee, Ayekpam Jiten said that the flyover bridge would be closed until the said lamps are repaired if the authority concerned fails to pay heed to the demand.
Development Committee, Uripok is formed by the residents of Tourangbam Leikai, Laikhurembi Leikai and Khoisnam Leikai.
Jiten said that the Uripok flyover is prone to accidents in the past due to improper lighting.
Though lamp posts were erected during the construction of the bridge, the same is non-functional till date.
Besides, the bridge also lacks sufficient number of reflectors and most of those positioned at the centre of the bridge are non-functional, the convenor pointed out.
State authorities have been approached over the situation umpteen times by the locals but to no effect till date.
As such, the joint committee has decided to impose complete blockade on the bridge from January 10 until the bridge is equipped with proper lighting system.
Expressing displeasure over the indifferent atitude shown by the authorities concerned regarding the matter, the committee chairman Yambem Ibeni also questioned the decision made by Transport Department to allot parking site for autos along both sides of the bridge.
This, Ibeni added, has caused more accidents in the area due to over crowding.
Inaugurated in the year 2009, the fly over has been lit only once since its grand opening that coincided with the marriage of Chief Minister Ibobi's son, Ibeni asserted.
The committee would undertake the task of litting up selected areas along the road from the fly over to Eroisemba.
A new system titled 'Safety zone from accident' would also be implemented from January in which volunteers of the Committee with assistance from traffic police, would impose strict traffic rules for a safer and better raod transport, the chairman further said.
