Excise Dept adds Rs 6 cr to exchequer

State Excise Department has added Rs 6.79 crore to the State exchequer and seized 23,175 litres of country liquor and 375 litres of IMFL between April and December this year.
Speaking to reporters, Excise Department Assistant Commissioner K Joykumar said that they collected Rs 15.62 lakh as fine and excise charges and received Rs 6.63 crore as excise revenue from defence and para-military forces during this time.
In all, 1459 cases were taken up in connection with liquor seizure, he said.
Joykumar further said that the Department currently has only 450 personnel although the sanctioned staff strength is 704 .
Moreover around 40 personnel would retire from service by February next year, Joykumar said and added that 70 per cent to 80 per cent of the existing staff would retire by 2019 .
Of the total 39 excise check posts, seven are located between Imphal and Mao, three posts between Imphal and Moreh and three on NH-37, he said.
Around 1015 litres of country liquor and beer were set on fire today.
The seized liquor was set on fire at Excise office complex, Lamphelpat today.
