Imphal, January 30 2018:
Soil samples collected from 23 sinking ones located along Senapati-Mao section of NH-2 would be studied.
According to information received from the Bharatiya Infra Project Limited (BIPL), which has been constructing Koubru Leikha-Mao section of the same highway, only eight sinking zones were identified when DPR for the ongoing highway construction work was prepared.
Now 15 more sinking zones have been identified taking the total number to 23.Even though there is a rehabilitation plan for the eight sinking zones identified in the DPR, geo-tech engineers have already collected soil samples from all the 23 sinking zones.
What shall be done to these sinking zones would be determined after studying the soil samples, said the source.
The highway development work is divided into two sections viz; Mao-Senapati and Senapati-Koubru Leikha, and the same work is going on in full swing.
The amount sanctioned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the project was Rs 288 crore.
Even though the amount was sanctioned in 2016, the appointed date was obtained on November 1 last year.
The appointed date was received late on account of certain factors, law and order being one.
Mobilisation work started earlier and the road development work started soon after the appointed date was received, said the source.
As per the DPR, the existing carriage way of the highway section from Mao to Koubru Leikha would be laid with a wet mix macadam of 150 mm thickness followed by a layer of dense bitumen macadam of 75 mm thickness which would be again covered with a layer of bitumen concrete of thickness 40 mm.
The existing breadth of the carriage way is assumed to be 7 m and it would be expanded to 9 m .
But there would be areas where the carriage way is not 9 m wide as expansion of the highway affects households at these particular points, said the source.
The carriage way from Mao to Senapati has been expanded and laying of shingles over the expanded portion has been completed over 9.06 Kms.
Laying of wet mix macadam has been completed over 2.71 Kms while dense bitumen macadam has been laid over 500 m .
Along Senapati-Koubru Leikha section, wet mix macadam has been laid on both sides of the carriage way over 2.5 Kms and another 1.41 Km has been laid with wet mix macadam on one side of the carriage way.
Laying of dense bitumen macadam has been started on one side of the carriage way.
Construction of breast walls on hill sides, culverts, drains and covering of drains is also going on, informed the source.
