World Heart Day 2024 was celebrated widely in the State on Sunday to raise awareness about heart disease and preventive measures to manage cardiovascular diseases.
BABINA Hospital
BABINA Hospital, Khabeisoi celebrated World Heart Day by organising a Free Heart Check-up Camp on Friday.
World Heart Day is celebrated this year under the theme, "Use Heart for Action".
The Day plays a crucial role in reducing the global burden of heart disease by promoting preventive practices, regular health check-ups and healthy lifestyle habits.
During the heart check-up camp jointly organised by BABINA Hospital and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Limited, patients were provided with various services at no cost which included body weight assessment, blood pressure checks, electrocardiograms, blood sugar tests, lipid profiles (cholesterol), thyroid function tests, hepatitis B and C screenings, and microalbumin tests.
A total of 51 individuals received free check-ups, tests, and medications.
Speaking at the event, Dr Ksh Kala, Senior Consultant, BABINA Hospital emphasized that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, claiming more than 18.6 million lives annually, with the majority of fatalities occurring in low and middle-income countries.
He also stressed on the need for small lifestyle changes, such as improved diet, increased exercise and better stress management, to effectively manage heart health and combat CVD.
As part of the observance, doctors, nurses, and nonmedical staff from BABINA Hospital participated in a short rally on the hospital campus, carrying banners and chanting slogans like "No Smoking," "No Alcohol," "Exercise Regularly," "Eat Healthy," "Control Blood Pressure," "Maintain a Healthy Weight" and "No Tobacco" .
SKY Hospital
SKY Hospital in association with Manipur Heart Foundation celebrated World Heart Day by organising a Free Heart Screening Camp on Friday.
The camp provided an opportunity to the people of Manipur for early detection of asymptomatic and symptomatic heart disease.
During the camp, a total number of 26 patients were examined, 24 ECGs, 13 Blood Sugar tests and 26, Blood Pressure checks were done.
Free medicines were also distributed to the patients.
At the event, Dr L Shyamkishore Singh, Chairman & Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital, Imphal expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the number of turnout for the Free Heart Screening Camp.
He also appealed to the people to avail the benefits of such camps conducted by SKY Hospital and Manipur Heart Foundation from time to time.
RIMS
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in association with the Department of Cardiology, also observed World Heart Day 2024 today in front of the General OPD Block, RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups in preventing heart diseases.
"We must take proactive steps to monitor our health to stay healthy.
Each year, approximately 18 million people die due to heart-related conditions such as heart attacks.
It is essential for everyone to take initiative in preventing these diseases by checking their health regularly and maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle", he added.
The Director also highlighted the importance of spreading awareness in the community to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.
The celebration was also attended by Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, Imphal; Dr Thokchom Sachin Deba Singh, Prof & Head, Department of Cardiology, RIMS, Imphal; doctors.

Imphal Heart Institute
World Heart Day 2024 was also celebrated today at Imphal Heart Institute (IHI), Sagolband Moirang Leirak on the theme, "Use heart for Action" .
As part of the celebration, a Public Cardiac Health Awareness Programme was conducted by Dr RK Lenin, former Head, Department of Psychiatry, RIMS and Yumkham Renuca, Senior Dietician, IHI.
A team of doctors from Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Kolkata and Imphal Heart Institute (IHI) also conducted Free Heart Health Check-ups for more than 200 people.
Also, an MOU was signed between Imphal Heart Institute and Narayana Speciality Hospital Kolkata (NSH) to provide the latest and best healthcare treatment.
Urban Health & Wellness Centre
As in other parts of the State and beyond, the Urban Health and Wellness Centre also observed World Heart Day at its centre at Uripok Haobam Dewan Leikai, today.
The function was participated by the doctor, nurse and other staff of the health and wellness centre as well as ASHA workers of Uripok Ward numbers 4,5,6 and 27 .
At the observance, Dr Leichombam Rajshree, Medical Officer-in-charge of UAAM Uripok unit, spoke about several risk factors and ways to prevent heart diseases.
She said that heart disease can be caused by a number of factors such as smoking, sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, overweight, diabetes among others.
Dr Rajshree appealed to one and all to check their blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol level regularly apart from maintaining healthy weight and exercising regularly to prevent heart diseases.
