Jiribam, November 28 2024:
Jiri United Committee (JUC) organised a sit-in protest here on Thursday, demanding the government to honour the demands placed before chief minister N Biren in connection with Jiribam incident, failing which launch of intense agitation is imminent.
The protest held under the banner 'Murder of Children and Women is the Act of Terrorists', 'Stop Terrorism, Stop Killing Innocent Children and Women', 'Revoke Re-Imposed AFSPA in Manipur Immediately', etc., was attended by people from various communities.
Speaking to the media, JUC chairman Mutum Maipaksana informed that sit in is aimed at reminding the government on its demands and securing the safe release of Laishram Kamalbabu, who went missing in Leimakhong.
He also recalled the incident of November 11 of abduction and killing of eight civilians in Jakuradhor Karong village by Kuki militants, and death of a student and injuries suffered by another in firing by a Manipur police team led by senior SP Sanjenbam Nectar.
Noting that the killing of nine people sparked protests in the state and outside, and vandalism of residences of ministers and MLAs, Maipaksana emphasised that the arrest of protestors by government is unreasonable and demanded that they must be released unconditionally.
Maipaksana also condemned the government for re-imposing AFSPA in areas under six police stations, amidst rising public agitation in the state and Jiribam and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
During the protest, the agitators held placards inscribed with slogans such as 'Punish student killer', 'We want justice', 'Centralgovernment must not divide Manipur', 'No arrest of village volunteers', 'Announce Hmar village volunteers as terrorists', 'Repeal AFSPA' and 'We want peace' .
