The office of the Manipur Mail, a house and one godown of a tent house have been reduced to ashes in a major fire that broke out at Uripok Ningthoukhongjam Leikai on November 24 at around 3.30 pm .
The tent house godown (store) belonged to the Editor of Manipur Mail, Ningthoukhongjam Sanatomba while the house belonged to his elder brother, late N Radhakanta.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electric short circuit at the house which spread to the neighbouring godown of JLM Tent House and office of the Manipur Mail.
Six fire tenders from Imphal West Fire Service rushed to the spot immediately and (fought the fire for nearly three hours.
The fire service personnel led by Joint Director of Manipur Fire Service, L Nabachandra Sharma could avert major disaster by preventing the fire from spreading to neighbouring houses.
Besides damaging at least two other houses partly, the fire raged one Alto car, 3 two-wheelers, one auto rickshaw, three power generators, 10 computers and a printer of the Manipur Mail daily.
Unknown number of tent house properties, electronic machines of Impact TV etc were also destroyed, said sources.
Properties worth over Rs 1 crore have been destroyed by the fire, added the sources.
Locals have expressed gratitude to Manipur Fire Service for their timely intervention which averted major disaster in the locality.
