Consultative meeting on 'illicit cultivation of poppy plant" held at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, August 25 2019: A consultative meeting between Ukhrul district police, Forest officer and village chiefs organised by Litan PS on the theme "Illicit cultivation of poppy plant" was conducted on August 24 at Litan PS.

The meeting was attended by 25 village chiefs and village leaders from 13 villages under the jurisdiction of Litan PS.

Speaking at the occasion, SP Ukhrul District, Ningshen Worngam said that a huge area of forested mountain cleared for such illicit cultivation is a 'wake up call' for all adding that all the leaders should take responsibility to stop this practice right away.

He also urged the village head and leaders to join in the Govt's efforts to stop such illegal cultivation and mentioned that as per NDPS Act, landowners under whose land cultivation is done are also liable to be prosecuted.

Addl SP Ukhrul, Rocky Tholu stressed on the negative effects of opium cultivation on physical health, geographical set up and social environment while mentioning that such practice is against one's religion too.

Wungrin Lansing, Asst Conservator of Forest, Ukhrul opined that humans are here to protect the mother earth, its land and forest and we have to nurture and take care of it.

OC Litan PS, Stanley Keishing highlighted the various relevant sections of NDPS Act and mentioned that the Act has stringent penal provision too.

Chiefs/Headmen/Chairman and village leaders expressed and shared their willingness to stop such cultivation but also higlighted the difficulty they faced for its implementation.

They also plead the Govt, through the meeting, to arrange an alternative for poppy cultivation.

They also asked for more of such meeting so that all villagers is aware of the illegality of such cultivation.
