Imphal, July 25 2013:
An assistant teacher of Emmanuel English Academy, Yaingangpokpi has been accused of severely thrashing a girl student for returning late to the hostel (boarding) after the summer break.
Displaying contused marks on her upper buttocks to mediapersons at AMSU head office today, the victim girl Khongbantabam Bobina Chanu (13) d/o Kh Raghu Meitei of Nongada said she decided to stay back at home for some days on the advice of a doctor that her skin ailment would need medication and regular washing with clean water.
As water available at the boarding was not considered to be hygienic, Bobina said she reported at the boarding on July 21, three days after the summer break was over.
While attending a coaching class on July 22 at the boarding building, mathematics assistant teacher namely Thangjam Raghumani Singh of Khurai Thangjam Leikai asked students who returned late after the summer break to stand up.
As Bobina and two other students duly complied, the teacher not only criticised the trio for failing in his subject but also started to beat them up for the delay in reporting at the boarding, the class IX girl narrated contending that she was more severely subjected to the harsh treatment than the other two.
Bobina maintained that she was brought home by her parents after the hostel warden was urged to contact them for she felt unbearable pain due to the beating.
Strongly condemning the assistant teacher's act and terming it as an affront to the student community, AMSU vice president Sanasam Subhaschandra Singh suggested that apart from proper conduct, a teacher should possess qualities of friendly personality and uphold ethics rather than apply physical prowess to rectify involuntary mistakes, if any, by a pupil.
Demanding disciplinary action against the teacher, he also strongly condemned alleged threat by the school authorities and hostel warden that Bobina keep the matter under wrap.
Further insisting that the accused teacher, school principal and hostel warden explain/clarify on the matter tomorrow, the vice president informed that assistant teacher Raghumani was also rusticated for his former school in Sekta for similar misconduct.
On the otherhand, AMSU also vehemently condemned the incident of issuing threat by telephone to Little Master English School principal on July 22 and lobbing of a hand-grenade at the school campus the next day.
Prevailing upon all concerned to honour sanctity of educational institutions, the students' body fervently appealed that such condemnable act be avoided in future.
