Abducted driver freed safely, with a rider

Imphal, April 23 2013:
Oil tanker driver Surjit who was abducted by some suspected armed militants from Kohima was released safe and sound today at about 2 pm near Kohima.
The oil tanker driven by Surjit belongs to one L Tolbi of Churachandpur.
According to one individual who took the leading role in the efforts to secure safe release of Surjit, Surjit was abducted in connection with a demand served on all oil tankers to pay Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000 each.
Following the cease work strike by tanker drivers to protest the abduction, people had started facing problem of fuel shortage which would lead to a serious crisis and public uproar in Manipur.
These imminent possibilities were highlighted to the armed militants and negotiations were held on the same basis.
Finally, the two parties came to an understanding and Surjit was released safely.
Hinting that the armed militants might be cadres of NSCN-K, the individual confided that the UG group warned of dire consequences if their monetary demand is not fulfilled.
As such, the matter entails further negotiation.
Meanwhile driver Surjit arrived at Imphal this evening.
With the abducted driver released, it is likely that the cease-work strike being undertaken by the All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Union will be called off from April 24 .
