Imphal, May 20 2021:
In view of the hardships faced by the hawkers amid the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the State, All Mayang Imphal Newspapers Hawker's Union and Thoubal District Newspaper Hawker Association in a joint statement appealed to the Government to formulate special policies for the welfare of the hawkers.
Talking about the selfless services rendered by the hawkers to keep people updated by disseminating news, sacrificing their own safety by distributing newspapers even in the containment zones, the hawkers sought the attention of the Government, subscribers and all concerned to think about the welfare of the hawkers and help them accordingly.
The hawkers urged the subscribers to clear their dues in time as they are going through a rough phase finding it difficult to make ends meet during the pandemic.
Due to decreasing number of subscribers and the hardships faced by the hawkers, it is becoming difficult for the hawkers to sustain a regular source of income and owing to this, many hawkers have resorted to other means of earning livelihood, it continued.
Further during this grim situation of the second wave of COVID-19 in the State, the Government has not taken up any measures to acknowledge the services of the hawkers.
If there are no hawkers to disseminate newspapers, it is of no point to establish a press and there will be no transparency of the various Government schemes therefore it urged the Government, publishers and authorities concerned to formulate special policies in the interest of the hawkers at the earliest and help the hawkers in sustaining a regular source of income.
