Imphal, December 17 2013:
Apart from sending a proposal to upgrade DM College to the status of a State University under the Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) or the National Higher Education Mission, a composite residential college would be set up at Sugnu under the same scheme, stated Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro.
Okendro was speaking at a public gathering after making a spot assessment of different development programmes that would be taken up under Sugnu Assembly Constituency, Thoubal district together with MLA Kangujam Ranjit and other officials today.
The site selected for a residential college which would be set up under RUSA was inspected by the team led by Okendro and Ranjit.
Later speaking at a public meeting at Sugnu Awang Leikai, Okendro said that he had sent a proposal to the Union HRD Ministry to upgrade DM College to the status of a State University.
The proposed residential college at Sugnu would be set up under RUSA, the 17th flagship programme of the UPA Government.
Similar colleges would also be set up at Tamei in Tamenglong district, Phungyar in Ukhrul district and Thanlon in Churachandpur district.
Moreover, 40 Government and Government aided colleges would be brought under the ambit of RUSA and Kakching Khunou College is one of them, Okendro said.
Plans are also afoot to set up a Government Polytechnic at Moreh.
Once RUSA funds are sanctioned, college teachers would be appointed through MPSC.
In the meantime, the Chief Minister would soon announce a new education policy for the State.
Earlier in the day, Okendro spoke at another function held at Chairel in connection with upgrading Chairel Junior High School to the level of a High School.
At both the functions, MLA K Ranjit, Higher and Technical Education Commissioner P Vaiphei, Thoubal DC T Ranjit and SP Dr AK Jhaljit were present as presidium members.
At Chairel, Okendro informed the gathering that Chairel Junior High School was upgraded to the level of a High School under Rastriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) at the expense of Rs 7.6 lakh.
Altogether 150 junior high schools would be upgraded to the level of high schools and Chairel Junior High School has been included among them because of the efforts made by MLA K Ranjit in this regard.
Establishment of a residential college at Sugnu has nothing to do with Kakching Khunou College, Okendro stated.
K Ranjit said the State Government selected Sugnu for the proposed residential college as Sugnu is located at the junction of Thoubal, Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Chandel.
There is no truth in the rumour that proposed college would sound death knell for Kakching Khunou College.
As promised during his earlier visit to Sugnu Higher Secondary School together with Minister Okendro, Ranjit today donated Rs 3 lakh to the school authority.
