Imphal, July 17 2024:
The State unit of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has extended its support to the hunger strike being staged by students of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) against the shortage of staff at the varsity.
A team of NSUI, Manipur unit members visited the site of the protest at Thangmeiband Maisnam Leikai and extended their support to the protesting students who have been demanding appointment of Vice Chancellor, Registrar and non teaching staff of DMU.
Speaking to the media by the sideline, NSUI National secretary Md Kabir Ahamad said that the Government not taking up any action to address the issue at DMU despite the students protesting since July 9 is unfortunate.
Saying that elevating Dhanamanjuri College to a varsity status is only in name, he added that DMU is not fit to be called a university as it doesn't have a regular VC, Registrar, non teaching staff and the required infrastructure.
Further stating that DMU has failed to hold examinations on time and it is a major setback to the students, Md Kabir urged the Government to take up necessary action and make sure the future of the students are not spoilt.
Solve the problem at DMU, he demanded.
Vice president of NSUI, Manipur unit Thokchom Langonba, on the other hand, asked how the authority is planning to hold both the third and fourth semester examinations of DMU in August simultaneously.
He cautioned that the NSUI is ready to launch an intense agitation if the Govt fails to entertain the demands of DMU students.
