Senapati, December 01 2015:
Inspecting the dilapidated state of National Highway 2 between Senapati DHQs and Maram, the Senapati District Students ' Association (SDSA) led by its President Pungdi Celestine inspected the said highway and expressed concern over the poor condition.
The team conducted a first hand survey of the said stretch of the highway and
significantly it has been the demand of the student body to develop the highway with proper drainage system since 2007 .
During the survey, the team found dangerous open culverts, massive/deep pot holes, unattended stretches and stone boulders along the route.
SDSA warned that if the requests/reminders to urgently repair NH-2 remain unaddressed, the student body will be compelled to respond accordingly in general interest.
Accompanied by media persons, the SDSA team was visibly upset to see the deplorable condition of the highway, despite the fact that it is the lifeline of the people.
The team found repairing work going on in some areas but the portions still remained unattended.
Earlier, civil society organisations of Sadar Hills had also protested with an 'economic blockade' against the poor condition of NH-2 which is now known as the Trans-Asian Highway-1 .
Stretches between Senapati DHQs and Mao have been divided among different work agencies and contractors.
It may be noted that, the NH-2 is under the State PWD highway division-1 and the recent sanction of the Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to repair the highways is yet to take off.
Stretches from Senapati DHQs to Maram, Makhan Tabio, Chakumai, Tadubi areas have been adversely affected due to poor drainage and monsoon driven landslides.
However, the lack of regular repairing and maintenance has caused serious damages to the highway which is used by over 200 loaded trucks, inter-State buses, commercial and private vehicles per day.
