Village chief abducted

CCpur, June 13 2022:
Chief of MT Geltam, a small hamlet located within Churachandpur's Singngat sub-division has reportedly been abducted by a group of armed men on Saturday from his village.
The village chief identified as Kammuanpau, head of Ngaiching was taken hostage by the armed men along with another person identified as Goukhanthang, s/o Kamzalian of T Khajang village, presently residing at Rengkai Bible Hills at about 8 pm.
Sources said the men who abducted the duo were even armed with automatic rifles.
Reportedly, the families of the abducted individuals were threatened against reporting the incident or going public.
It is also said that abductors demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore, though its veracity could not be confirmed.
As the Singngat police learnt about the case, they launched a massive search operation with the assistance of other security agencies.
It is reported that a vehicle (Bolero) used in commi- tting the crime has been seized from a remote location in Henglep sub-division today at about 9 am.
As per sources, the duo might have been taken into the jungle from the spot where the vehicle was abandoned.
Local sources said the armed abductors are members of a non-SoO group and they are known to the villagers as their self-styled leader had frequented the village.
Meanwhile, the Zomi Chiefs' Association has condemned the abduction and demanded immediate and safe release of the two individuals.
