Imphal, June 13 2011:
A two-day health and environment youth camp organised by the Jessami Village Authority and Jessami Youth Club at Jessami under the sponsorship of Youth Affairs and Sports Department concluded today.
Speaking at the opening function, Environment and Ecology Wing Senior Scientific Officer Presho MK Shimray called upon all the citizens to share due responsibilities to conserve nature and save environment.
To maintain a healthy environment, primary forest area of the State should be one-third of its territory.
But due to the rising population and increased rate of deforestation, these primary forest areas have been reduced to the level of secondary forests, MK Shimray said.
This is one of the primary reasons for the changing adverse climatic conditions resulting from ecological imbalance.
Due to extensive deforestation, the rare Siroy Lily is on the verge of extinction.
Likewise, the population of Sangai which has been already declared an endangered species has been decreasing due to human disturbances to its natural habitat.
Taking all these into account, youths have great role to play in conserving nature for future.
"Only then, we can hand over a healthy environment to the future generations", MK Shimray asserted.
Noting that Jessami is located in the border, the Senior Scientific Officer advised the participating youths to remain always wary of the dreaded HIV/AIDS, and also to stay away from all kinds of anti-social activities.
The opening function was also attended by Raphei Katamnao Long president M Issac and Senior Youth Officer of YAS Department M Chandrakumar.
