Birth place of Gen Thangal left unattended

Though Thangal Surung village is located just 37 Kms away from Imphal within Saikul sub-division, all basic amenities including potable water facility are either lacking or non-existent in the village.
The villagers have not been getting any PDS item till date.
A get-together function of the newly elected functionaries of the Thangal Union and Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) members was held at the historic village on January 5 .
Talking to media persons by the sideline of the get-together function, Thangal Surung village headman K Gongrichim said that Thangal Surung village had close ties with the royal Court of Manipur when Manipur was under monarchy but today the Government of Manipur has been treating the historic village as an alien village located beyond the boundary of Manipur.
The only school of the village was reduced to ashes during the communal clash of 1994.Since then, now new school has been established at the village apart from the existing Primary School.
There is no potable water facility in the village nor do the villagers get any PDS item till date.
No replacement nurse has been sent after a nurse posted at the village PHSC was transferred away in July 2014.One nurse appointed on contract basis is also posted at the same PHSC but she does not come to the PHSC regularly, said Gongrichim.
Newly elected Thangal Union president Dr Chan Thangmi lamented that the State Government has totally abandoned the village even though it is the birthplace of General Thangal.
By neglecting the birth place of General Thangal, the Government of Manipur has been insulting the martyr.
In the absence of any high school in the village, students of Thangal Surung village have been going to other villages for formal education which means extra expenditure to the impoverished villagers.
Till date, Anganwadi is unknown to the historic village of Thangal Surung.
Citing the class VI Hindi text book prescribed by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM) which says that the birth place of General Thangal is unknown, Dr Chan Thangmi contended that the text book is misleading.
He called upon the relevant authority to correct the factual error and teach the historical truth to students.
He also appealed to the Government to build a water supply plant for the village as early as possible.
On behalf of all the villagers, the Thangal Union president demanded a community hall.
He also urged the authority concerned to renovate the eco-tourism park developed at the village in 2012 .
ICHAM president N Boy urged the State Government to pay special attention to Thangal Surung village in view of its historical significance and plight of villagers.
