Imphal, August 11 2020:
Appealing for mass awareness programmes to teach people to live with COVID-19 and designate RIMS as a hospital only for non-COVID patients, members and volunteers of six student bodies staged a demonstration at DM College campus today.
Representatives and volunteers of six student bodies-All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Apunba Ireipaki Maheiroi Singpanglup (AIMS) staged the demonstration holding placards and registering a series of demands.
Claiming that the "lockdown" is not a "silver bullet" to end the novel coronavirus pandemic, the student bodies maintained that the Government should establish an effective and practical policy to face the pandemic and make known the same to the public.
As the pandemic is not going away soon, the Government should hold mass awareness programmes to teach people to live with/amid COVID-19 .
Considering the hardships non-COVID patients are facing amid the pandemic, the student bodies demanded that all the hospitals and healthcare centres be opened and RIMS be designated as a dedicated hospital for the non-COVID patients.
There should be adequate and enough life savings drugs available in the State and the Government should ensure that people get multivitamins drugs and others which enhance the body immune system.
The Government should also ensure that there is uninterrupted supply and availability of essential items including food with the people.
Welfare schemes for people providing essential services should be launched and the Government should form Cabinet subcommittees for medical, food/Public Distribution System, education and other relevant Departments.
The Government should hold regular press conferences to educate and inform people on the COVID status and policies of the Government to contain the disease, said the student bodies.
