Rally held against Mapithel Dam construction

Conflict Widow Forum, Lilakambong Meira paibi, Nongpok Sekmai, People Platform Secretariat, People Action for Development, NEDF, Life Development Foundation and other civil society bodies jointly organised a mass protest rally against Mapithel dam construction today at Nongpok Sekmai.
About 400 villagers and students from 12 villages of Thoubal district participated in the rally, according to a statement.
The rally was flagged off by secretary Lilakambong meira paibi from Ukhongsang Keithel Mayai Leikai and it went till Nongpok Sekmai Panthoibi Sanglen.
The participants of the rally raised slogans like 'Save Thoubal River,' 'Respect Indian Forest Law,' 'Stop Mapithel Dam,' etc.
Sunibala, convenor of Conflict Widow Forum, Thoubal district said that more than 50 villagers along the sides of Thoubal river are survived by this river.
They collect sand and stone and catch fish for their livelihood.
Many paddy and vegetable fields are irrigated by the river water.

She said that all those who are dependants on the river would be badly affected once the water is blocked due to the Mapithel Dam.
She also pointed out that the consent of people concerned was not obtained for the purpose.
The participants of the rally strongly felt that the Mapithel Dam has a direct impact on both the downstream and upstream dwellers.
They also said that the key principles of environmental policy and regulatory framework of GOI should be adhered to.
The participants further strongly condemned the construction of Mapithel Dam and blocking of the Thoubal River.
They demanded that it should be stopped at any cost and pledged not to back their stand until the demand is met, the statement added.
